An alumnus of Boston College, Massachusetts, USA and Government Law College, Mumbai, Burzin Somandy is a Mumbai based lawyer and from a family of lawyers. He is also a qualified Solicitor in the United Kingdom, with legal practice experience spanning over two decades.

Mr. Somandy has received accolades throughout his academic tenure in USA and India and was bestowed with the prestigious “Yashwant Dalal” Trophy for being the most outstanding law student while pursuing his Bachelor of Law degree (LL.B) from Government Law College, Mumbai.

He is regularly invited as a panellist and guest speaker at various forums pan India on Directors and Officers liability, Insurance law and liability laws. As a mark of appreciation, he has been conferred with the status of Honorary Lifetime Alumni by the University Department of Chemical Technology.

The founder is one of the first few lawyers who have been recognized as an expert by general Insurance companies in this field throughout India.

Burzin Somandy often wears the hat of a legal writer. He has authored monthly columns in Industry journals on liability laws and co-authored a critical report sponsored by the City of London titled “Making India a successful (Re) insurance Hub”

He is also the author of the chapter on India in the book endorsed by the American Supreme Court Bar Association, “The Global Directors and Officers Desk Book”, where he has penned the India chapter on the liability regime of directors and officers in India.

He is honored to be invited to write a guest column in the world renowned blog the “D&O Diary” on “The Evolutionary Change in the Liability of an Independent Director in India”.

He has essayed the legal chapters pertaining to Indian insurance / reinsurance industry in the monograph “A Transformative Agenda For The Indian Insurance Industry and its Policy Framework” authored by Mr. H Ansari and Mr. Arun Agarwal, who are recognized insurance industry stalwarts.

He has been regularly featured in Asia Insurance Review, sharing his views on various aspects of insurance liability and coverage.

Mr. Somandy is humbled to:

  • Be invited as a guest speaker by the Bombay Chamber of Commerce and Industry to speak and give inputs to the board of directors on development of insurance and liability laws in India.
  • Have participated in legal proceedings in various international jurisdictions, including the United Kingdom, U.S.A., South Africa, Italy, Netherlands, Singapore and Turkey.
  • During his days as a junior lawyer in the chambers of Senior Advocates Mr. Yusuf Muchhala and Retired Justice H. Suresh, he also participated in the Justice Sri Krishna Commission which was appointed in respect of the 1992 -1993 riots and bomb blasts which took place in Mumbai.
  • Be appointed by the Incorporated Law Society to set and correct exam question papers for the solicitor’s exam.
  • Judge various debates, moot courts, MUNs, etc at various colleges and schools to mentor young adults and students alike.
  • Has been a part of the international student mentor and internship program of the renowned US law school of Lewis & Clark.
  • Has reported judgments to his name.
  • Last but not the least, he has consulted various foreign governments, including the Canadian, Dutch, and Czechoslovakian Governments and advised them on matters in India.
